Day Six: Snorkeling for the First Time

Josh and I went snorkeling today for the first time. We drove about ten minutes south of our hotel to another resort for the excursion. It was a boat ride with continental breakfast and lunch served plus two stops for snorkeling (9:00-1:00).

We arrived at the resort's beach activity stand and got signed in. Then we headed down to the beach. We had to walk into the water to the boat's stairs. There were huge waves, but the timing of the waves was fine when Josh and I climbed the stairs up to the boat. Josh had to carry our bag over his head so our stuff would stay dry. It was an adventure.

Once on the boat, we traveled for about 15 minutes before we got to Malokini. It is a rocky island that was covered with frigate  birds. They are huge and there were hundreds of them!

A view of the small island of Molokini from our hotel:

Me after snorkeling. You can actually see the mark on my forehead from the mask. Ha!

The staff passed out the masks with the snorkel attached, as well as swim fins. They had a special spray to defog the masks. It actually worked! There was quick lesson about how to get the mask on and how to get water cleared from your mask. Then we were ready to snorkel. We walked down the same set of stairs in which we had climbed onto the boat. At the bottom, we sat on a step and put on our fins and then entered the water.

The water was cold, but not too cold. We are used to the freezing cold waters of Massachusetts. This was warmer. It took a minute or two to get used to breathing under water and then we were off. Josh and I both love swimming and feel very comfortable in the water. We could not believe the beauty of the coral and the fish. It was incredible.

After an hour in the water there, we got back on the boat and traveled for about 20 minutes to Turtle Town. Here the water was not as clear, but we could still see many fish. More importantly, we saw turtles up close and personal. One came up to the surface about 6ft. away from us. It popped its head out of the water multiple times and checked us out. Absolutely adorable! They were big turtles. Some we saw were just hanging on the ocean floor while others were swimming around. It was surreal. We both were having trouble believing we were seeing what we were seeing throughout the trip. Heavenly.

Once we were back on the boat, we ate a sandwich and enjoyed the ride back to the beach. Getting off the boat was another adventure. Ha! We were dehydrated and sat at the resort's pool to have a cold beverage before getting back in our car.

So we are so hooked, we want to snorkel somewhere in Kuaia once we get settled there. Maybe Friday or Saturday. This time we want to rent the equipment and swim out from a beach. Or maybe another excursion to a remote spot like Malokini.

When we got back to the hotel, we showered and napped for about an hour, them took a drive over to the Five Palms Restaurant to have dinner and watch the sunset.

Aloha!

Ready for dinner with our cool new bling! :-)

Five Palms Beach

Tomorrow we are planning on taking the road to Hana. We hear it takes all day and is totally worth it. Rainforest, waterfalls, etc. Lots of photo opportunities! Aloha!
